People's Carnival Parade in the Park 2012

There were times when Oldham's streets would be full of colourful floats on Carnival day. In those days every business had a truck of some kind and would willingly donate it to local groups to use for the parade - it was good advertising for their business after all.

Today, however, trucks are a lot harder to come by. Cost of fuel, driver hire and the loss incurred by being out of action for a day, have all impacted the traditional carnival parade format. Add to this the growing environmental awareness and the message it sends to use such big wagons, it prompted a rethink of the parade.

So, in 2011 the carnival management group decided to break with the past and change the format of the parade for good. It would take place inside Alexandra Park and would be float-free. The emphasis would be on colour, costume and dance rather than float decoration.

The First Parade in the Park

Did it work? As a first attempt it certainly did. The majority of entries in 2011 were dance troupes and they brought a lot of colour and dance. Altogether there were 32 entries. Inevitably, there were a few problems, but the route worked and the parade was held.

Parade in the Park 2012

We're hoping to improve on this in 2012 and will be looking for new, innovative ideas that will help compensate for the noise and drama of the floats of old. Any ideas are welcome. In the meantime, please enter your group, organisation or charity into the event as usual.

Applications

Your Carnival entry may take the form a walking, dancing, cycling entry or a combination

of all or any of these and you can raise money for your group or charity throughout the procession from onlookers.

When you've completed the form

COULD YOU CREATE A BEAUTIFUL COSTUME FOR CARNIVAL 2012?

Would you like to learn how? From professional artists? We're asking interested local community groups to help put together some creative, lively parade costumes in time for our Carnival Parade in the Park on Sunday June 24th 2012 in Alexandra Park - as part of the People's Carnival weekend. There'll be prizes and a chance to promote your group or organisation. You can also display your costumes the previous day at our Peoples Carnival Fun Day in Oldham Town Centre.

So, if your group wants to raise its profile and join in this fantastic Oldham event which will bring together the whole community to promote our 2012 theme:Peace, Hope & Harmony.

To help you we are planning workshops leading up to the event, with support from artists to help your group make banners and costumes to show off and display in the parade and at the event. Costumes like the one on the right. All you need is time and commitment, some willing volunteers, creativity and a sense of fun.
