People's Carnival 2012 Another great event being planned for Oldham!
Carnival weekend is over two days this year - split between the Town Centre (Sat) and Alexandra Park (Sun)!
Saturday June 23rd - Town Centre Family Fun Day!
On Saturday June 23rd a Family Fun Day, in Oldham Town Centre, is being
organised with lots of FREE stuff for the kids - bouncy castles, face painting, clowns etc. There'll also be a small stage with live LOCAL entertainers performing throughout the afternoon. There'll be lots of charity stalls as well and lots more which we'll tell you about nearer the time. The Family Day starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm.
Sunday June 24th - CARNIVAL DAY at Alexandra Park!
If you're planning to watch the Olympic Torch bearer (who arrives in Oldham on Carnival Day), then why not come down to the park afterwards.
The day starts at 10am and finishes at 9pm. There are two live stages, the UK Dance Troupe Competition, field events, fun fair rides, stalls and plenty of food, ice creams and other delicious things. Also, there will be a Youth Village organised by the council's Integrated Youth Service.
Carnival Parade
If you're stil not satisfied then there's the colourful spectacle of the Carnival Parade in the park!
Setting off in the afternoon, this promises to be another great
success.
The route round the park was full of onlookers last year -
the first year - and 2012 should be even better with bigger and brighter costumes.MORE INFO SOON...

Parade in the Park Success
A scene from the Parade in the Park 2011
It was a day to remember! The first ever Carnival Parade in Alexandra Park. And it went off without any hitches!
OK. There weren't the usual floats to be seen. But the participants made up for it with a spectacular display of bright colours, fabulous costumes and vibrant dance and music.
Mary from Royton, who came with her two children, Jane and Ben, watched all the parade from the Promenade. "It was different without the big lorries" she said "but it was colourful and all the people on the parade seemed to be enjoying themselves. The dance troupes were great".
2012
Now that the Parade in the Park has been established, the management are hoping to improve on it each year. "Well" said Paul Davies, Event Director "we don't have to worry about road closures, hiring trucks and drivers and fuel costs anymore. Things can only get better".
The group are hoping community groups will get involved in producing extravagent costumes for the annual event.

COULD YOU CREATE A COSTUME
LIKE THIS FOR CARNIVAL 2012?
Would you like to learn how? From professional artists? We're asking interested local community groups to help put together some creative, lively parade costumes in time for our Carnival Parade in the Park on Sunday June 24th 2012 in Alexandra Park - as part of the People's Carnival weekend. There'll be prizes and a chance to promote your group or organisation. You can also display your costumes the previous day at our Peoples Carnival Fun Day in Oldham Town Centre.
So, if your group wants to raise its profile and join in this fantastic Oldham event which will bring together the whole community to promote our 2012 theme: ‘Peace, Hope & Harmony’.
To help you we are planning workshops leading up to the event, with support from artists to help your group make banners and costumes to show off and display in the parade and at the event. Costumes like the one on the right. All you need is time and commitment, some willing volunteers, creativity and a sense of fun.
