Oldham’s very own mini mods, 5ft Fez, the UK's only gigging junior school band, will be rocking Alexandra Park at this year’s Carnival in June and they'll be bringing some friends too! The canny

youngsters, together since Christmas and now in demand up and down the country, have enlisted the help of Lazy Aces Scooter Club, based in Royton, to put on a music extravaganza of 7 hours of live punk, mod, Indie and Northern Soul, all to raise money for Oldham Cancer Support Centre.

A spokesman for the club said “Matts one of our younger members and we're delighted to be helping him and the boys out for this worthwhile cause. The 11 bands are top class, all giving their time for free and the sponsorship response from local business to fund this, has been fantastic.” The club, one of the largest in the North West,

are also organising a mass ride into Alexandra Park and a dazzling display of award winning classic Lambretta and Vespa scooters, some over 50 years old! A fund raising night with live music and DJ is to be held as well at The Junction pub in Middleton on Friday 16th May; tickets are just £3 and are available from Shaun on 07973 196 103.

VOLUNTEERS - the Backbone of the Carnival

Charities and community organisations always make the best of Oldham Carnival each year and have always played a major part in the event. In fact, they have been the backbone of the event throughout with their hard working volunteers.

They usually put up stalls on Alexandra Park for the weekend and hand out information, recruit supporters and raise funds - as well as having a good time and joining in the fun.

Judging by the number of stage acts received for this year's Oldham Carnival Big Stage, there is definitely no shortage of talent in the town. The stage was fully booked by the middle of March, with the final list of 24 acts being published this week and because the Lion's Den is also a stage area this year (with around 20 acts over the weekend), this now brings the total of performers at this years event to 44.
