- including 17 floats (pictured

length of the parade was about one-and-a-quarter miles.
Collecting Money
One of the most beneficial parts of the Carnival Parade is the
chance to raise funds through public collections. Groups and
individuals can raise money for good causes on the parade route.
Times however, have changed. The days of throwing money at floats
have gone and it is more difficult to collect on the route than
ever. That doesn't mean you shouldn't but our experience of
the 2006 and 2007 events suggest that more money can be raised
over the weekend at Alexandra Park - either by having your own
stall or by entering one of the events (Its a Knock-Out for
example).
Floats
and Stuff
A major attraction for the crowds who like to watch the Carnival
Parade each year are the decorative floats and trucks. At the
2007 Carnival we were able to use the beautiful custom trucks
provided by D.P.Firth - a local
haulage firm. They provided the trucks for the groups to decorate
early Saturday morning before the parade start time at noon,
giving the group members a few hours to do their fancy work.
Of course, any truck (providing
it doesn't infringe health and safety regulations) can be used
as a float, and, because there are only a limited number of
trucks available from DP Firth, we would advise you either to
book them early (cost £50) or ask your local truck company
to provide you with one in return for publicising their company
name etc.
